I often receive calls from clients who have used Chat GPT to answer their questions on various Human Resource Management and Industrial Relations. When I review the information they were provided with it is often incomplete or inaccurate in relation to the context of the matter in question.
I thought a good exercise was to get Chat GPT’s opinion on itself in providing this type of advice, so I asked it the following question.
Can you write around a 150 words on why ChatGPT can’t be trusted and at times in not 100% accurate in providing Human Resource Management and Industrial Relations advice and the reason why?
Chat GPT provided the following answer, which I have cut and pasted verbatim.
ChatGPT can be a useful starting point for understanding Human Resource Management (HRM) and Industrial Relations (IR) issues, but it cannot always be trusted to provide 100% accurate or reliable advice. A key reason is that HRM and IR are highly context-specific. Advice often depends on jurisdiction, current legislation, awards, enterprise agreements, case law, and the specific facts of a workplace situation. These factors change frequently, and even small differences can significantly alter the correct outcome.
ChatGPT does not replace professional judgment or legal interpretation. It does not have real-time access to legislative updates, tribunal decisions, or organisational policies unless explicitly provided. It also cannot assess risk in the way an experienced HR practitioner or industrial lawyer can, particularly where reputational, financial, or legal consequences are involved.
As a language model, ChatGPT predicts likely answers based on patterns in data rather than verifying advice against authoritative sources. For these reasons, HRM and IR guidance from ChatGPT should be treated as general information only and always checked against current legislation or professional advice before being relied upon.
